Having just come back from Australia, I have been thinking about New Zealand museums and galleries in relation to international issues. It seems that there are some common threads, especially the focus on ethics and standards, and communicating the various forms of ‘value’ that museums and galleries contribute – cultural, creative, economic, amenity, social, educational etc.

At MA14, Auckland Museum presented research they have undertaken with Auckland Council to measure the Social Return On Investment (SROI) for the Moana – My Ocean exhibition. This paper has now been peer reviewed and published, showing a dollar value for SROI.  We expect to have videos of the MA14 keynote speakers, including Ganesh Nana’s exploration of economic and other ‘value’ on our website next week.

In Australia there has recently been publicity about dubious provenance of items acquired by museums. The National Gallery of Australia is embroiled in an international legal battle after it was found that an item it had bought from a New York based dealer Art of the Past was in fact stolen. It has subsequently come out that the NGA bought several million dollars worth of items from this dealer, as did other major museums internationally. A meeting of the four peak museum sector organisations in Australia has issued a joint statement on ethics in collecting to highlight the importance of due diligence and maintaining the highest possible ethical standards.

In China, the museum-building spree is running into problems with fakes. According to state media, 299 new establishments registered last year, but fakes are said to be rife in its antiques market. Police shut down the Lucheng museum, in the north-eastern province of Liaoning, after finding almost a third of the 8,000 items on display were not genuine. Counterfeits on show included a sword touted as dating from the Qing Dynasty and worth 120 million yuan (£11m), the report said.

The local news has been mixed, with the struggling Katikati Museum closing, and minimal damage from a potentially disastrous fire at Waikato Museum. Coincidentally, we had a fire evacuation drill at the MA office this week.  When did you last have a fire drill? Do you hold them regularly?

Kiwi North has secured $370k from Lotteries towards its $700k stage 2 development, Lopdell House is on track to open later this year as Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery, and in Ashburton locals have flocked to an open day to in the new museum and art gallery building ahead of fitout for opening later this year.

More good news stories include kuia featuring in exhibitions at Aratoi (Kuia: Kiri Riwai-Couch) and HCAG (Momo Kauae: Moko Kauae in Contemporary Art), the Sarjeant Gallery reopening in its temporary premises on Sarjeant on the Quay, and the new extension at Tairawhiti Museum has opened.

Creative New Zealand is consulting on a review of its support for visual and craft/object art, with responses due on Wednesday 25 June.  This is an important opportunity to have a say on the structure which affects how funding is distributed, and how.  A number of museum and gallery professionals took part int he focus groups whcih preceded the darfts reports which are now out for response. MA will be making a response, and we encourgae all who have an interest in Creative NZ’s craft/objecta dn visual art forms to read them and respond.  If you want to feed into MA’s response, please let us know by Friday 20 June.

And a reminder that ICOM New Zealand is calling for abstracts for the Pacific Connections conference in Auckland, 22-23 September 2014, which will focus on Pacific museum collections and research. Abstracts are due on 16 June 2014. Proposals for the 2014 National Digital Forum are also due on 16 June.

News Update, 2 October 2012

Kia ora,

The latest news covers exhibitions, Te Papa’s purchases from the Les and Milly Paris art collection auction, lots of school holiday activities coming up, the Governor-General’s visit to the Eastern Southland Gallery, the go-ahead for New Plymouth’s Len Lye Centre, funding through Creative New Zealand for an theatre on Auckland’s waterfront, and more staff moves. The release of a new edition of the Lonely Planet NZ has 4 museums in its top 12 recommendations: Auckland Art Gallery, Wallace Arts Centre, NZ Rugby Museum and Rotorua Museum’s new Don Stafford Wing. There is also coverage of the passing of artist Don Binney.

Tonight this year’s Macquarie Private Wealth New Zealand Arts Awards will be presented in Auckland. Nine artists will be announced as recipients of awards totalling $405,000. You can find out about them and their public open day in Auckland tomorrow on the Arts Foundation website.

I was delighted to be hosted by the Northland Museums Association at the new Mangawhai Museum last week. Over 25 museum people from Wellsford to Kaitaia gathered to share their latest news and to explore the almost-finished Mangawhai Museum building.  We had a sobering session in which Betty Nelley shared the Kauri Museum’s recent fire experience, and Fire Safety Officer Mike McEnaney explained how to reduce fire risk.  He had an excellent booklet which outlines what small museums can do to prevent, prepare, respond and recover from fire.  And the single most effective measure is? – sprinklers.  We will be mailing copies of the booklet to all small museums later in the year.  if you’d like more information in the mean time, ask your local Fire Brigade.  Better still, invite them round for a cuppa and talk about how you can reduce the risk of fire.

It was great to hear all the recent exhibition, developments and future plans of museums in the north. I updated the group on progress on establishing an accreditation scheme for museums in New Zealand, and we had a good discussion about ethics and standards.  The NMA group has proved that getting together with neighbouring museums is a great way to learn as well as to share inspiration and re-energise, particularly for smaller museums and volunteers who may otherwise be working somewhat in isolation.  We had a very enjoyable day topped off with a friendly meal and entertaining presentation from retired NZ Maritime Museum CE Larry Robbins sharing his experience of rescuing yachties as Commander of the HMNZS Monowai in 1994.

Museum Sector Survey out this month
We have been working with a researcher and a small reference group to develop a new museum sector survey, which will be going out in the next week to all museum and gallery organisations. It is really important that every museum fills in the survey. Top-line data will be published as well as comprehensive analysis in a full report.  We will be using this information in our national advocacy work, working with the Ministry for Culture & Heritage and for academic research, and  you will be able to use it to inform your own planning and reporting. We’ve had another meeting in Hamilton and the enthusiastic folk there are gearing up to offer colleagues a great conference around the theme of leadership.  We’ve invited some exciting speakers, and are holding our breath to await their response.  Make sure you plan to be in Hamilton from the afternoon of Wednesday 10 April until the end of the day on Friday 12 April…

While up that way I called in at the Waikato Coalfields Museum where Jane Ferrier showed me around their extensive collection and intriguing Topp Twins exhibits.

Last month MCH consulted on a discussion paper exploring the introduction of Immunity From Seizure (IFS) legislation for New Zealand. The MA Board has talked to MCH policy people, and attended workshops with others from museums, galleries and wider cultural sector. In general, such legislation seems like a good idea, although there are several areas of detail which will require more thought before any legislation can be drafted. We made a submission on the IFS discussion paper to this effect by the due date of 24 September. If you are interested in this issue and have not been part of the discussion so far, there will be more opportunities coming up. MA will continue to work with MCH as they work through the submissions and next steps, to ensure that all museum/gallery perspectives are considered, and to keep you informed of progress.

Congratulations to the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery for their wins at the Museums Australia Publication and Design Awards last week. CAGTPOW received awards for best magazine or newsletter (Bulletin) and website (My Gallery), as well as a commendation in the exhibition catalogue category and the judges special award – the ‘Be Inspired category – for De-Building. DPAG was highly commended in the Poster and Invitation categories and won for LOG in the Calendar of Events and Information Brochure category.  Entries for 2013 will open on 1 February.

News Update 14 June

Kia ora,

There have been consultations and announcements about council funding around the country, and most councils seem to be continuing to support culture and heritage – although not always as much as we would hope. In this financial climate just holding the status quo can be seen as a victory. The newspapers are covering museum and gallery activities around the country, and the latest news can be read by members on our website here. In other news, we were delighted to hear that Mana Recovery won the Green Gold category at the Wellington Gold Awards last week. Mana Recovery employ people with disabilities, and made our wonderful recycled banner bags for the MA12 conference. The Gold Awards also recognised Denis Adam, whose Adam Foundation has been very supportive of the arts. And a reminder that you can listen to Radio NZ broadcasts via the internet, including an interview with Aotea Utanganui’s Cameron Curd on last week’s Arts on Sunday and an item on the proposed Hundertwasser Arts Centre in Whangarei the week before.

Statistics and research
Museum organisations should have received an invitation from Strategic Pay to participate in this year’s museum sector remuneration survey. Now in its third year, this survey is providing extremely useful information. MA worked with Strategic Pay to set up the survey, and reviews it each year. The report is available for purchase by participating organisations. If you are interested, or your museum has not received an invitation, please contact Strategic Pay or the MA office.

We are working on an expanded museum sector research project. This will provide a comprehensive overview of the museum sector, identify and measure sector trends, and inform and assist with advocacy and strategic and business planning. We will be contacting museum organisations shortly to explain the project and seek information.

Philanthropy
Philanthropy is top of mind at Creative New Zealand these days. They have recently appointed Jean Goodband in the new role of Manager, Private Giving and Partnerships Programme and are hosting the Guy Mallabone Sessions on fundraising. They will shortly be launching a new philanthropy programme to help the arts sector to identify and develop alternative sources of funding. “There is huge potential to grow a culture of giving to the arts in New Zealand and this programme will be key to realising this,” Jean says.

New Zealanders and the Arts
Creative New Zealand has also recently made available online the reports from its research New Zealanders and the Arts: Attitudes, Attendance and Participation in 2011. This project aims to provide insights that help the arts community and its supporters identify new trends in a changing environment and take up new opportunities. The research was conducted by independent research company Colmar Brunton. It builds on previous research in 2005 and 2008. A full report of the national results and a video of New Zealanders talking about what the arts mean to them are available on the Creative New Zealand website.

MCH appointments
As well as moving their office down the street – to almost opposite MA – the Ministry for Culture and Heritage has just made appointments to three new staff positions. Dr David Butts will move from Tairawhiti Museum to the role of Manager Heritage Operations in July, and Ralph Johnson will be Manager Heritage Policy. Bev Hong has joined the Cultural Policy Branch as Senior Adviser, Cultural Sector Research – we will be working with Bev and Murray Costello on our museum sector statistics project.

News update 9 March 2012

At last its official! Part of the new Air Force Museum development will be available for the restoration, storage and rehabilitation of heritage and cultural collections displaced by the Canterbury earthquakes. A proposal to establish a collections recovery centre has been with funding agencies in Wellington since last year, and it has now been confirmed that $1.5 million from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust and up to $2 million from government will be available to make it happen. Canterbury’s displaced cultural institutions will be able to use the facilities at the Air Force Museum, due to open by November, free of charge for up to three years. Storage will be available for a further three years. See this and other recent news stories here.

We also congratulate all the team at the Air Force Museum on, and heartily endorse, their Christchurch City Council Mayoral Award presented ‘in recognition of acts of kindness, service and heroism during and following the Christchurch earthquakes’. And marking one year on from the February 2011 earthquake, NSTP has posted a ‘Canterbury earthquake anniversary series’, including a piece by Thérèse Angelo which shows the medal and outlines the recovery centre project, on the nzmuseums blog.

Those who were at MA10 in New Plymouth will recall Queensland Art Gallery’s Tony Ellwood’s inspiring presentation about how he ensures QAG is relevant to its audiences and stakeholders. It has been announced that Tony will be the new Director of Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria after Dr Gerard Vaughan retires later this year. The Herald Sun interview with Tony asks him about his plans for the NGV.

There is no news roundup on our website this week. We’re having some technical challenges, as the method of delivery of news items to us has changed, and we are still working out how to make the new online links available to members. This is in part a reflection of the fact that physical newspapers are in decline around the world as more of our news and information-gathering is sourced online. here is an example of a story about Rotorua Museum appearing in ‘Happyzine’.

Diversity Action – Race Relations Day 21 March
Its good to see museums and galleries exhibiting and offering programmes that address issues of diversity, prejudice and inclusion. Te Ngira – the New Zealand Diversity Action Programme – run by the Human Rights Commission, is a great way to gain support for and extend the reach of such programmes. HRC send out regular emails and promote all kinds of activities through their website, including a museums and exhibitions listing. They also facilitate the annual Diversity Forum, usually in August, and Race Relations Day each year on 21 March. There is information about the programme on the diversity action web pages, links to a poster and other resources to support race relations and diversity action.

Creative New Zealand’s Optimise programme supports online marketing capability for arts organisations, and some of its is directly relevant to museums of all kinds. They are planning webinars and the first edition on the online newsletter Optimise Insights has information about the coaching programme, mobile trends and energising your Facebook audience.

Last month we noted crowdsourcing as a growing way for smaller organisations to raise funds and build communities of interest. This includes fundraising websites such as PledgeMe, Givealittle and Fundraiseonline, as well as social networking. We would be interested to hear about your experiences with any of these tools – what has worked (or not) for you, and how.

And in amongst conference organising, sending out the 2012 Directory, arranging scholarships and awards, we have been continuing our advocacy. Phillipa Tocker and MA Chair, Thérèse Angelo met with the Hon Christopher Finlayson, Minister for Arts, Culture & Heritage, earlier this week. We discussed current sector issues, especially the continuing squeeze on public funding, and some of the consequences and possible ways of alleviating them. We talked about specific areas of need such as Christchurch, about collaborative opportunities, and the benefits of accreditation, and where these fit with broader policy challenges. Our Minister is very supportive of his portfolio, and we look forward to continuing to work with him and the Ministry for Culture & Heritage to ensure the best possible outcomes for all our members.
