Reflections on MA 12 – Peter Read

Over the next few days we will be posting some reflections from people about their experiences at MA12, today we have Peter Read from the Otago Settlers Museum.

MA12: Collaboration in Practice

At the end of Day 2 Phillipa asked me what I had enjoyed most about MA12: Collaboration in Practice so far. ‘All of it’, I replied, from my usual perch on top of the fence. 

I was glad to have travelled up to Wellington the day before the conference to catch Jock Phillips setting the scene with some insightful opinion delivered in the inaugural Museums Aotearoa Public Lecture.

The following morning, as the number of delegates assembling in the level 2 foyer at Te Papa grew to critical mass before heading up to Te Marae for a powhiri, the first impression gained was how hot it was. Perhaps it was a combination of all the hot air being expelled by chin-wagging delegates and the balmy Wellington weather. It was a sign of things to come. There would be much more talking and continued good weather (other than a bit of a soaking on the way to the Mayoral reception preceding the awards dinner).

From the spirited debate of the Willie Jackson-chaired Taonga to Taonga session to the tales of collaborative projects both inside and outside the museum sector, Day 1 was a consistently stimulating affair that provided much food for thought.

Former CEO of Science North in Sudbury,Ontario,Canada – Jim Marchbank, keynote speaker for Day 2, delivered international flavour and prompted a yearning to hit the road and visit the institution he led for 24 years. Later that day we did hit the road. Unfortunately Canada was out of the question, so I settled for Porirua, where I could take in some institutions closer to home that I had also heard good things about and had long-hankered to see.

It was true, by the end of Day 2, I had enjoyed it all in equal measure. Then along came Umberto Crenca, keynote speaker for Day 3, with his story of the revitalisation of central Providence into an arts and entertainment district. Bert’s story, ramped up in passionate style, blew us all away. The session on the lessons in collaboration learned from the Christchurch earthquakes was similarly inspiring.

As with all conferences some of the most valuable things afforded by MA12 were the opportunities to catch up with people, take a break from our own institutional timetable, and gain a view of what is going on in the wider museum world. For me MA12 also achieved what it set out to do, providing some valuable examples of, and showing some of the lessons learned from, collaboration in practice.

News Update 4 April 2012

Following media coverage of their staff structure late last year, Canterbury Museum has been working on re-defining staff roles, which has included some redundancies and several new positions which were advertised by MA earlier this year. Three key appointments have recently been announced. Lesley Colsell, previously General Manager Museum Programmes and former Chair of MA, is now Canterbury’s first Museum Best Practice Manager. Sarah Gordon will begin as Communications Manager after Easter, and Carmen Marsh will take up a fixed term position as Projects Office Manager later in April.

There are many exciting opportunities coming up for professional development, promoting your museum or gallery, and being involved in wider networks. These include our own MA12 conference as well as lectures and workshops with visiting speakers and other experts on subjects such as medallic management, arts access, exhibition lighting and audience engagement. Inaugural TelstraClear Museums Aotearoa Lecture – Tuesday 17 April
The first of this new annual lecture series will be presented with support from TelstraClear. Jock Philips is well known to many through his work with Te Papa, Te Ara and most recently for his ‘Insider’ blogs during the RWC 2011 ‘Real NZ’ festival. The lecture is at 6pm on Tuesday 17 April at Te Papa. This public event is free to attend, please RSVP to secure your seat, contact Museums Aotearoa by email or telephone (04) 499 1313.

AGM – Thursday 19 April
Reminder – the 2012 Annual General Meeting of Museums Aotearoa will be held at Te Papa, at 12 noon on Thursday 19 April. There will be a Board vacancy for one Individual member: Jenny Harper will complete her first term on the Board, and is standing for re-election. The notice of meeting, draft agenda and voting information are in the members area of our website here, and hard copies have been posted to Individual members. If you wish to appoint a proxy for voting at the AGM, please download and print the proxy form, or contact the MA office.

2012 Museum Awards
Congratulations to all finalists in the 2012 New Zealand Museum Awards. The judges had a hard time deciding the most deserving among all the outstanding achievements in the record number of entries received this year. Finalists will be celebrated and winners announced at a gala dinner at City Gallery Wellington on 19 April, now fully booked. New membership benefits
MA membership invoices for 2012 fees have been sent out to all Museums, Individuals and Associates – thank you to those who have already responded. As we develop our services, the MA Board has been working on making membership benefits more accessible. A major change this year is that, as part of the entitlement of Museum membership, all staff will be able to receive direct communication and information by email from MA. Staff or volunteers at member museums who choose to take up the discounted $50 Individual membership will receive additional benefits: a personal MA membership card giving free entry and discounts at member museums, and hard copies of MA publications. News Update 22 March 2012

Kia ora koutou,

In the office we are very busy with preparation for MA12, guest speaker tours, Awards, AGM, and the new MA Lecture. We’re also working on the National Visitor Survey, and are very pleased that more museums are taking part this year.  As the number and range of participants grows, this will become an increasingly useful resource for all.  In addition, we are developing a more comprehensive sector statistics project to provide better data about the overall size and shape of the museum and gallery sector.

We’re also busy recruiting staff.  While we know we can’t ‘replace’ Sophie, we will be appointing a new Membership Services Manager when she leaves to explore the world.  Sophie will be with us until the end of April, looking after membership and helping Rebecca and the team with MA12.

MA12 conference – EARLYBIRD REGISTRATION EXTENDED TO 23 MARCH
Make sure you register this week for ‘Collaboration in Practice’ in Wellington, 18-20 April.  An invitation to the Directors and Governors’ Dinner at Parliament, hosted by Hon Chris Finlayson, has been sent to all directors – as we don’t have contact details for many board/trust members, please contact us if you would like any of your ‘governors’ to be invited. There are many other social and professional sessions, behind the scenes tours, and associated events. ATTTO – Museum Training Council
The Training Council is convened by ATTTO, our Industry Training Organisation, to provide advice and input into their support of workplace training. At its meeting last week, the Council looked at priorites for the coming year, and how they relate to other sector activities and initiatives.  We were very pleased with the work ATTTO has done over the past year in developing resources to support the Museum Practice Certificate, and a new induction package, Welcome to Museums.  By bringing relevant information together, these resources will make achieving the standards quicker and more achievable. To find out more about the qualifications and resources, contact ATTTO by email or tel 04 499 6570.  If you are an experienced museum professional, you may be interested in becoming an assessor for others working on the museum standards.

News Update 13 October 2011

The latest news is again full of activities associated with the Rugby World Cup. Other stories include local government funding issues, distribution of Skyhawks and repatriation from French museums. The round up is here in our members’ area, where the puzzle-minded can play spot the mistake – clue: technology vs education!

MA12 conference, Wellington, 18-20 April 2012
We had a record response to the Call for Papers, and the MA12 planning team is meeting later this week to wrangle it all into a cohesive conference programme. MA12 is already looking very exciting and inspiring, with lots to do in the ‘coolest little capital’ as well as the conference programme itself. Look out for announcements of international keynote speakers and preliminary programme soon, with registration to open in December.

MOTAT’s acres of aircraft
Among all the hoopla around major museum openings and ‘that’ sport tournament, MOTAT has quietly opened another 2500 sq m of aircraft display in an innovative timber building with a 42m column-free span nearly 16m high. Designed by Studio Pacific Architecture, the new building is is linked to the old aviation hall, at left below, which has been completely re-fitted.

Environmentally conscious and interesting architecturally, an air layer between timber screens and the external wall helps to control light and temperature. The huge space requires only a low provision of mechanical heating, and glazing to specific areas of gallery space maximises natural light where appropriate. reducing the need for artificial lighting.

The internal open floor area of the new display hall is the largest clear span timber portal frame structure in New Zealand. Prefabrication meant the actual contstruction period was quite quick. The concrete floor had to be laid in one go – that meant a 2.00am start for the concrete crew and 104 concrete trucks taking their turn to pour.

There are plenty of aircraft on display lovingly cared for by MOTAT’s teams of enthusiasts. The new complex is named after aviation hero Sir Keith Park.

Changing the guard in the UK
From 1 October, new arrangements for the delivery of responsibilities previously undertaken by the UK’s Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) take effect. This follows the previously announced decision to close the MLA as part of a government review designed to reduce the number of arms-length agencies. Arts Council England takes over museums and libraries responsibilities, including the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme Some MLA staff have moved to posts with the Arts Council to help deliver these functions and responsibilities. Sir Andrew Motion, MLA Chair said: “The MLA Board wishes the Arts Council and The National Archives all the best and looks forward to them building on all the achievements of the sector, and the work of the MLA, to help bring about better and more accessible museum, library and archive services for the public.” Resources on the MLA website will remain live until 31 March 2012, by which time relevant material will be transferred to the Arts Council and Archives sites.

Jock Phillips has been travelling the country for the REAL NZ Festival writing a blog as the ‘Insider’, sharing his view of some great places and events.
Albertland & Districts Museum in Wellsford has revamped its website, and is looking forward to the Albertlanders’ 150th celebrations over Easter 2012.
A redesign for online encyclopedia Te Ara gives clearer and quicker findability for a site that constantly amazes with its depth and breadth of information. And they explain what they’ve done and why on the Te Ara blog – a helpful insight into making a website more user-friendly.

Other events
There are lots of other events happening after the rugby. Coming up in November are the NDF (earlybird closes this week, Board nominations due Friday) and Conservators conferences and a further planning meeting for WW1 commemorations in Wellington, Museum Facilities conference in Auckland, Colenso symposium in Hawke’s Bay, and an event for Museums Aotearoa members in Christchurch. PS – Auckland Museum has teamed up with Māori Television to make a 13-part series featuring taonga from the museum and their stories. Tāmaki Paenga Hira is in Māori with English subtitles, and premiers on Māori Television at 8.30pm on Wednesday 19 October.
