News Update 16 July

It has been good to hear about exciting Matariki events in museums around the country to brighten up the stormy winter. There are also some great school holiday programmes coming up – see the postings on our Facebook page, and please add more.

Museums Aotearoa Meetings in Hawke’s Bay/Canterbury
Last week the MA Board spent a day in Napier. We arrived to a very soggy morning, and got most of the Board business completed before we were joined for lunch by staff, volunteers and committee members from around the region. A total of about 20 people from as far away as Waipawa and Onga Onga, as well as Hastings and Napier, caught up informally before work-shopping key topics with MA Board and staff. We heard from Michelle Sim of the Air Force Museum about the new ’emerging professionals’ group she is establishing with others around the country. We really appreciated the opportunity to meet more of our members ‘on the ground’, and their willingness to share issues and ideas – and the sun even came out so we could sit outside.

We also had a good planning session for the MA14 conference being hosted by MTG Hawke’s Bay, 2-4 April 2014. We’ll be outlining the theme and calling for contributions in the next few weeks. While in Napier, we enjoyed a sneak preview of the former Hawke’s Bay Museum & Art Gallery which will re-open as the greatly expanded MTG Hawke’s Bay this September.

This was the first in a series of regional meetings over the next few months. The next will be at Canterbury Museum on the afternoon of Thursday 15 August. That meeting will start with afternoon tea, and is followed by a presentation by Sarah Davy of the NZ Film Archive with a screening of Temple, Prison, Restaurant, the compilation of museum representations which was shown at MA13. More details will be sent to museums in the Canterbury region later this week, and we’ll put it out on our blog and Facebook as well.

We’re planning more meetings around the country, including Dunedin, Nelson, Rotorua, Whanganui/Palmerston North, Dargaville, Auckland and Wellington. If you’re interested in hosting one of these meetings, please contact the office.

MA Board – advocacy
Your Board and staff are using these meetings to inform our work and our planning. One of our key activities is advocacy. We do this in a wide range of ways – by research and data such as the sector survey, supporting members in policy and advice, working with you on our Code of Ethics, and promoting the positive impact that museums have in our communities. In coming months we expect to work with NSTP to review museum standards, with ServiceIQ to improve training frameworks, and to engage more actively in tourism as well as continue our current conference and awards programmes.

An international example of advocacy tools which museums can use locally is the UK Museums Association’s new report and web resource Museums Change Lives, which highlights the social role of museums. This campaign builds on last year’s Museums 2020 consultation which looked to the future of museums and their impact, and drew input from around the world, including NZ and Australia. The aim of Museums Change Lives is to “enthuse people in museums to increase their impact, encourage funders to support museums in becoming more relevant to their audiences and communities, and show organisations the potential partnerships they could have with museums, to change people’s lives.” Check it out if you’re looking for some inspiration.

New Members’ Forum Coming Soon
The MA office is thrilled to have a new database and website, scheduled to launch next week. Though the general look of the website will remain the same the new ‘back end’ will bring some exciting new features, especially in the members’ only section of the site.

At launch you will be asked to login and update your contact details and communications preferences. The new development enables us to better target emails. Those of you who love our News & Notices, but would prefer not to get our job vacancies, will be able to select which of our communications you would like to receive. Additionally, when you login you will find new features such as a new private members’ forum and online directory to make it easier to keep the conversations going with your MA colleagues.

Blog, MAQ and more
We have been having such great responses to our calls for contributions to the MAQ that we have decided to start publishing regular guest blog posts including profiles of some of our members and more case studies of projects. Please contact the MA office if you are interested in being a contributor to any of our publications.

News Update 8 May 2013

MTG Hawke’s Bay (formerly Hawke’s Bay Museum and Art Gallery) are beginning their move back into the Marine Parade/Herschell Street suite of buildings in Napier. After nearly 3 years away, the new $18 million building is being handed over so the staff can prepare for reopening this September. Four months seems like luxury compared with the tight timeframes experienced by some other redevelopments lately, but I expect it will fly by. We’re looking forward to seeing the new spaces as we begin planning for the MA14 conference.

ANZAC Day was commemorated around the country and attracted a good deal of media coverage for museums. There is increasing interest in WW1 and its centenary years 2014-2018, within our sector and more broadly across agencies and among the general public. It seems that since those with the last living memories have passed on, successive generations are wanting to find out about the people and events whose legacy we remember on ANZAC Day. Having completed and reported on the 2012 Museum Sector Survey, and run the 2013 national visitor survey, we are looking forward to other research this year. The next piece of work is a survey of individual members through Australia-based Survey Matters in partnership with the Australasian Society for Association Executives. Associations Matter – 2013 State of the Sector Study will give individual MA members the opportunity to tell us about your needs, preferences and requirements. Because this study is being run across a wide range of associations throughout Australia and NZ, we will be able to gain a better understanding of why people join associations such as ours, what we can provide to our members and how. Other participants include LIANZA and Museums Australia. The invitation to participate will go out to individual MA members in the next few days. Later in the year, Survey Matters proposes conducting a similar study of industry bodies, which would cover our museum members. We’ll keep you informed as this study and our wider research progresses.

Here in the dying city of Wellington, government policy work continues – I wonder what will happen to all the public servants when the government moves to Auckland? DIA is consulting on proposed changes to Lotteries Community Committees. Consultation is still open about financial standards, and this and other policy changes is outlined in the MAQuarterly which will be in the mail to you next week. As we build up towards the local council elections in October, we will all need to think about ensuring our sectors’ interests are understood by our candidates and voters. An immediate opportunity to raise profile is International Museum Day, which falls next Saturday, 18 May. With the theme of Museum (culture + memory) = Social Change, the field is wide open for interpretation in any museum context. Many museums choose this date to offer behind the scenes tours, and this year Museums Wellington are going one further – they’re taking people by bus to visit their off-site Collection Store. News Update 17 April 2013

Kia ora,

Whew!  We’re back in the office in damp Wellington after a wonderful time in Hamilton.  The sun shone, our Waikato hosts were generous and welcoming, and it seems a good time was had by all.  We thank all the conference presenters and participants, and particularly the 200+ delegates – without your attendance and enthusiasm, there would be no conference.

We congratulate all the 2013 NZ Museum Awards entrants, finalists and of course the winners: Auckland Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery, the Fashion Museum, The Kauri Museum and Toitu Otago Settlers Museum. These are great examples of excellence and innovation.

At the awards celebration dinner we were delighted to announce a new professional development grant in partnership with the Asia New Zealand Foundation – see our website. We also acknowledged Finn McCahon-Jones, winner of The Clark Collection Scholarship for 2013.  Finn is Associate Curator, Applied Arts & Design at Auckland Museum.  The scholarship is supported by National Services Te Paerangi, and Finn will travel to the UK to attend the Attingham Summer School and visit other organisations in England.

Last week we also held the 2012 Museums Aotearoa AGM in Hamilton. Here is a brief summary:
– the 2012 Annual Report was presented orally – it will be printed and mailed out with the next MAQ in May
– the 2102 Financial Accounts can be downloaded from our website here
– the 2012 museum sector survey results can be downloaded as Executive Summary or the full 2012 Sector Survey Report
– the revised Code of Ethics was endorsed, subject to consideration of any further comments from members by the Board at its next meeting (date mid-May tbc)

There is disturbing news from Bosnia-Herzegovina, with yet another national museum closing down. Earlier this year the national art gallery closed, and this month the 124-year-old national Museum followed. A total of 7 national institutions have been left in political limbo in the wake of peace arrangements which ended the war in 1994, with neither federal nor state-level governments seeing these relics of a previous ‘nation’ as their responsibility. While some remain open with reduced capacity, the future of all seven looks bleak unless there is significant change in political attitudes. www.cultureshutdown.net

As we read that by the end of the year 45% of New Zealanders will own smartphones, and rates of ownership accelerate internationally, it is interesting to see the release of a US-UK survey of mobile use in museums. The UK’s Museums Association and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) jointly surveyed over 1100 museums and found that while over half of the respondents offer mobile content in some form, 40% of American museums and half of UK museums do not have any mobile features, mostly citing the barriers lack of funding and expertise. The good news is that it is becoming easier and cheaper to develop apps for use on personal smartphones, without the need for specialised equipment or software.

The Department of Internal Affairs have published a summary of the results from their ‘Public trust and confidence in charities survey’ which also discusses results from Empathy Research work done in 2011. One of the key findings from the research is that people want to know how charities are using their funds, so they can trust where it is their money is going, and that trust is generated through tangible, visible results and a personal connection to the cause. Increasing trust in a charity not only increases the likelihood of giving, it raises trust in the entire sector that the charity belongs to. Conversely people are less likely to trust charities that use aggressive tactics, suggest large donations, have representatives who are ‘just doing another desk job’ and that pay their CEO a big salary. We have begun compiling listings for the 2013 Directory of New Zealand Museums and Galleries. The directory is one of the services we provide to the sector and we try our best to make sure every museum in the country is listed. All museums should have received a copy of their entry to confirm their details. Thank you to those who have already sent their response. Please refer to our publications page for different options and rates.

Museum Sector Survey out this month
A reminder that our sector survey is currently running until 26th October 2012. If your organisation has not yet not taken the time respond we would encourage you to do so. Whether you are a large organisation or a small volunteer run museum your participation is important as it will enable us to gain a thorough understanding of the sector and the issues that museums face, and it will ensure your organisation is included in the information available to help lobby the government for greater support and recognition of the sector. We are interested in understanding the diversity within the sector and the range of issues that museums and galleries face. Your contribution will help provide a more comprehensive and accurate picture of New Zealand’s museum sector.

MA13: Hamilton, 10-12 April 2013
Our team from Waikato Museum and the wider region are working on an inspiring programme for colleagues to get together in Hamilton to share, learn and develop our leadership skills, knowledge and capacity. There will be keynote speakers, workshops, panel discussion sessions, visits to local institutions, the 2013 NZ Museum Awards celebration, and the second annual Museums Aotearoa Lecture. And of course there will be lots of social occasions to catch up with old friends and meet new colleagues. The planning team already has some great ideas for speakers and special sessions, and we invite you to participate as well – so we have issued a general call for contributions, ideas and suggestions – all welcome!

News Update, 2 October 2012

The latest news covers exhibitions, Te Papa’s purchases from the Les and Milly Paris art collection auction, lots of school holiday activities coming up, the Governor-General’s visit to the Eastern Southland Gallery, the go-ahead for New Plymouth’s Len Lye Centre, funding through Creative New Zealand for an theatre on Auckland’s waterfront, and more staff moves. The release of a new edition of the Lonely Planet NZ has 4 museums in its top 12 recommendations: Auckland Art Gallery, Wallace Arts Centre, NZ Rugby Museum and Rotorua Museum’s new Don Stafford Wing. There is also coverage of the passing of artist Don Binney.

Tonight this year’s Macquarie Private Wealth New Zealand Arts Awards will be presented in Auckland. Nine artists will be announced as recipients of awards totalling $405,000. You can find out about them and their public open day in Auckland tomorrow on the Arts Foundation website.

I was delighted to be hosted by the Northland Museums Association at the new Mangawhai Museum last week. Over 25 museum people from Wellsford to Kaitaia gathered to share their latest news and to explore the almost-finished Mangawhai Museum building.  We had a sobering session in which Betty Nelley shared the Kauri Museum’s recent fire experience, and Fire Safety Officer Mike McEnaney explained how to reduce fire risk.  He had an excellent booklet which outlines what small museums can do to prevent, prepare, respond and recover from fire.  And the single most effective measure is? – sprinklers.  We will be mailing copies of the booklet to all small museums later in the year.  if you’d like more information in the mean time, ask your local Fire Brigade.  Better still, invite them round for a cuppa and talk about how you can reduce the risk of fire.

It was great to hear all the recent exhibition, developments and future plans of museums in the north. I updated the group on progress on establishing an accreditation scheme for museums in New Zealand, and we had a good discussion about ethics and standards.  The NMA group has proved that getting together with neighbouring museums is a great way to learn as well as to share inspiration and re-energise, particularly for smaller museums and volunteers who may otherwise be working somewhat in isolation.  We had a very enjoyable day topped off with a friendly meal and entertaining presentation from retired NZ Maritime Museum CE Larry Robbins sharing his experience of rescuing yachties as Commander of the HMNZS Monowai in 1994.

Museum Sector Survey out this month
We have been working with a researcher and a small reference group to develop a new museum sector survey, which will be going out in the next week to all museum and gallery organisations. It is really important that every museum fills in the survey. Top-line data will be published as well as comprehensive analysis in a full report.  We will be using this information in our national advocacy work, working with the Ministry for Culture & Heritage and for academic research, and  you will be able to use it to inform your own planning and reporting. MA13: Hamilton, 10-12 April 2013
We’ve had another meeting in Hamilton and the enthusiastic folk there are gearing up to offer colleagues a great conference around the theme of leadership.  We’ve invited some exciting speakers, and are holding our breath to await their response.  Make sure you plan to be in Hamilton from the afternoon of Wednesday 10 April until the end of the day on Friday 12 April…

While up that way I called in at the Waikato Coalfields Museum where Jane Ferrier showed me around their extensive collection and intriguing Topp Twins exhibits.

Last month MCH consulted on a discussion paper exploring the introduction of Immunity From Seizure (IFS) legislation for New Zealand. The MA Board has talked to MCH policy people, and attended workshops with others from museums, galleries and wider cultural sector. In general, such legislation seems like a good idea, although there are several areas of detail which will require more thought before any legislation can be drafted. We made a submission on the IFS discussion paper to this effect by the due date of 24 September. If you are interested in this issue and have not been part of the discussion so far, there will be more opportunities coming up. MA will continue to work with MCH as they work through the submissions and next steps, to ensure that all museum/gallery perspectives are considered, and to keep you informed of progress.

Congratulations to the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery for their wins at the Museums Australia Publication and Design Awards last week. CAGTPOW received awards for best magazine or newsletter (Bulletin) and website (My Gallery), as well as a commendation in the exhibition catalogue category and the judges special award – the ‘Be Inspired category – for De-Building. DPAG was highly commended in the Poster and Invitation categories and won for LOG in the Calendar of Events and Information Brochure category.  Entries for 2013 will open on 1 February.
